Israeli Researchers Find Key to Creating Better Medicines with Fewer Side Effects

(Hebrew University of Jerusalem) A new study published in Science by Professors Yossi Paltiel of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Ron Naaman from the Weizmann Institute of Science describes a breakthrough technology with the power to create drugs with fewer unwanted side effects. Their method will allow chemical manufacturers to keep "good" molecules and to discard "bad" ones that cause harmful or unwanted side effects. Currently only 13% of drugs undergo such separation, even though the FDA recommends that all drugs be separated. In the field of agrochemicals, separated pesticides and fertilizers require smaller doses and cause less environmental contamination than their unseparated counterparts. The simple and cost-effective separation technique that relies on magnets has the ability to produce better medicines, food ingredients, dietary supplements and pesticides.
