Egyptian Jews: A Community in Danger of Extinction

(Al-Ahram-Egypt) Dina Darwish - Magda Haroun, 62, is the youngest of nine Egyptian Jewish women, most in their eighties, who are all that remains of a community that numbered 64,000 in 1947 and was one of the most prosperous in the Middle East. Families like Mosseiri, Quatawi, Rolo and Sawares started the first Egyptian banks (Egyptian Immobile Bank, Egyptian National Bank, and Egyptian Commercial Bank). Moreover, Jews were a fundamental pillar of the cinema industry and they contributed to the prosperity of cultural life in Egypt in the beginning of the 20th century.
