Analysts: Now Is Not the Time to Revive the Mideast Peace Process

(VOA) Meredith Buel - After more than three years of violence between Israel and the Palestinians, some Middle East specialists are saying now is not the time for the U.S. and other countries to revive the peace process. Former Middle East envoy Dennis Ross says, "Three years ago we were talking about making peace....Today we are talking about ending a war." Israeli MK Rabbi Michael Melchior, a strong supporter of the Oslo peace accords, says, "We cannot come with an overall peace solution now at this stage. We should not even attempt it," he said. Yossi Alpher, a former senior official of Israel's intelligence agency Mossad, says the peace process "failed because it was not successful in replacing Arafat's leadership with a Palestinian prepared to approach the conflict differently and capable of doing so."
