The Shi'ites and the Future of Iraq

(Foreign Affairs) - Yitzhak Nakash In the wake of the September 11 attacks, the threat to U.S. interests in the Persian Gulf does not emanate from an Iranian Shi'ite revolution that has lost its fervor, but rather from the growth of Sunni Islamic radicalism influenced by the Wahhabi-Hanbali school dominant in Saudi Arabia. Wahhabism's hatred for America is rivaled only by its hostility to Shi'ism. To contain its spread, the U.S. will need to build bridges to Shi'ites in the Arab world as well as to the reformers in Iran.
