Riyadh and Cairo Give Thumbs-Down to Washington's Mideast Reform Plan

(AFP) Middle East heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Egypt have told the U.S. in one voice that they reject its plan to democratize the Arab world. Riyadh and Cairo also said in unison that the Western model of democracy does not necessarily fit a region largely driven by Islamic teachings. A joint statement issued at the end of a brief trip by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to Riyadh Tuesday said: Arab states "do not accept that a particular pattern of reform be imposed on Arab and Islamic countries from outside."
